“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."
I have always liked the picture Jesus gives us at the end of Matthew 7. He describes two men who built houses. From the outside, there may not have been much difference between them. Both had built something they could call their own. But Jesus tells us that one man was wise because he built his house on the rock.
The difference was underneath.
Jesus says the wise man is the one who hears His words and does them. That is an important distinction. It is possible to hear what Jesus says without actually allowing His words to change the way we live. We can read our Bibles, listen to sermons, attend Bible classes, and even know what Scripture teaches, but Jesus reminds us that knowing His words and obeying His words are not the same thing.
That makes this passage a little uncomfortable for me. It causes me to ask, “What am I actually doing with what Jesus has taught me?” It is easy to agree with Jesus about forgiveness until someone has really hurt us. It is easy to talk about trusting God until something happens that we don't understand. It is easy to say that God's kingdom should come first until something else becomes more important.
Jesus is not asking us simply to admire His teaching. He is asking us to build our lives upon it.
Then Jesus introduces the storm. He says the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew against the house. Notice something important: the wise man's house was not spared the storm. Being built on the rock did not mean that trouble would never come. The difference was that when the storm came, the house stood.
That is a comforting thought because Jesus never promised His followers a life without storms. We will experience disappointment, grief, uncertainty, temptation, and difficulty. Faith does not necessarily keep the storms away. Instead, faith gives us a foundation that can hold us when the storms arrive.
And foundations are built before the storm.
Everyday decisions matter. When we choose honesty instead of convenience, forgiveness instead of resentment, humility instead of pride, and obedience instead of what may be easier, we are building. When we pray, study God's Word, serve others, and put Jesus' teaching into practice, we are building. Those choices may seem small at the time, but over the years they become the foundation beneath our lives.
That leaves me with a simple question: “What am I building my life upon?” Not merely what do I know about Jesus, but what am I actually doing with what He has taught me?
The storm will come. Jesus tells us that much. But He also tells us how to prepare for it. Hear His words, put them into practice, and build your life on the Rock.
Then, when the rain falls and the winds blow, we can stand—not because the storm was weak, but because our foundation is strong.
